THIN INSULATION UNDER SCREED: AN EFFICIENT TECHNIQUE

In a house, insulation is a key point. It allows to reduce the energy expenses and to increase the comfort of the house.

All areas can be concerned: the attic, the ceiling, the basement, the walls,… Insulating your house is an essential element to make your house more sustainable. But where to start? The attic represents one of the biggest energy losses in a house. Once these are well insulated, you can then move on to other areas such as the floor!

Placing insulation under the screed is an effective technique for insulating your floors. Why should you do this? Which insulation should be used? Aluthermo® explains it all to you!

FLOOR INSULATION

Each improvement made to the insulation of a house increases the comfort of living a little more. But it also allows you to save on your energy bills. A

Insulating the floor can reduce energy losses in the house by up to 10%. In terms of temperature, an uninsulated floor has a temperature of about 11°C, while an insulated floor will allow you to reach an average temperature of 20°C.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INSULATION FOR THE FLOOR

To improve the performance of your floor, there are different insulation techniques:

  • Insulation from underneath: this consists of placing an insulator at the level of the ceiling of the cellar or crawl space. This technique allows to gain 2 – 3°C. It allows the floor to be completely separated from the cold and often humid air of the basement. Moreover, this technique allows not to demolish and to start big works.
  • Insulation of the floor of the crawl space: this technique makes it possible to insulate the crawl space. It cuts off the cold coming from the ground.
  • Insulation over the top: this consists of placing an insulator under the floor covering. This is a very efficient technique, but it involves the complete renovation of the existing floor.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE TYPE OF INSULATION FOR THE FLOOR?

Each home has a specific type of floor. When starting a renovation, it is important to identify the type of floor and its construction characteristics in order to choose the best type of insulation.

The insulation solution for a floor should therefore take into account:

  • The nature of the support: is it a slab, a crawl space, a floor,…
  • The construction method: is it a wooden floor, a reinforced concrete slab, a concrete floor,…
  • The general state of the floor: if the floor is too damaged, a complete renovation can be considered?
  • The strength of the floor: can the floor support an additional load?
  • The constraints of the level to be insulated: will the insulation cause the floor to rise?

These questions will help you choose the ideal insulation for you! When it comes to floor insulation, the question of the thickness of the insulation will often come into play. That’s why Aluthermo® insulation products are so popular for floor insulation. Their fairly thin thickness provides good insulation without having to raise the floor!

WHY CHOOSE UNDERLAYMENT INSULATION?

If the house is in a renovation phase and the floor covering needs to be changed, then under screed insulation is an ideal solution.

Underlayment insulation consists of laying a selected insulation on a floor. Then a screed is poured. This screed is intended to receive either a glued floor covering, or a sealing mortar for tiling type coverings.

If this insulation technique includes having to demolish the old floor, it allows the floor to be insulated effectively and to obtain very good results.

The insulation under screed has several uses:

  • The first and most important one is that the insulation under screed allows to place a heating system in the floor. But this is not a requirement for using this type of insulation.
  • This type of insulation makes it possible to reduce thermal loss to a minimum.

ALUTERMO QUATTRO FOR FLOORS: THE IDEAL SOLUTION

The Aluthermo® Quattro insulating product is an effective way of installing insulation under screed.

It is an excellent heat distribution element, resists compression and provides excellent acoustic and thermal insulation.

Thanks to its thinness, it avoids raising the floor and thus preserves living space.

Thin insulation under screed is a perfect solution for home renovation work.
A real plus to increase your comfort and make your home sustainable.
